How The Boston Globe is building a social video practice

A free workshop from the Lenfest Audience Community

Join us in welcoming The Boston Globe’s Emily Sweeney, the Globe’s first-ever social video journalist, for a candid conversation on what it takes to grow a social video practice inside a legacy newsroom.

We’ll talk with newsroom leaders about how the Globe made the organizational decision to create Emily’s role and what they’ve learned since, while Emily will walk us through what her job actually looks like day to day, including how she covered the 2026 World Cup through a social-first lens.

Together, we’ll explore how newsrooms can develop social video talent from within, how leaning into regional identity can drive audience growth, and what smaller organizations can take from the Globe’s playbook even with fewer resources.

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 20

Time: 2 p.m. ET/ 1 p.m. CT / 12 p.m. MT / 11 a.m. PT

Guests:

  • Emily Sweeney, Social Video Journalist at The Boston Globe
  • The Globe’s social team
