Beyond Print is a program created to help guide publishers away from print-centric revenue models toward a sustainable digital future.

The program offers free resources, including the Beyond Print Toolkit and Beyond Print Diagnostic, to help publisher navigate print transitions.

Beyond Print also offers a free community of practice created in partnership with Blue Engine Collaborative. The peer-to-peer learning cohort is open to all independent newspapers and offers virtual workshops, case studies, and information exchange.

The Beyond Print program launched in 2022 in partnership with the American Press Institute. The pilot cohort consisted of four participating news organizations — La Voz at The Arizona Republic, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and The Seattle Times — to review their reliance on print revenues and create digital-first products and workflows. As part of the program, outlets tested new ideas to create and expand sustainable digital models tailored for their organization and audiences. They also developed strategies to increase print readers’ use of digital products and adjusted their print operations to align with their print revenues.

In June 2023, the Institute and API brought together more than 20 news organizations for the first Beyond Print Convening in Detroit. Attendees ranged from organizations at the early stages of print reduction to fully digital organizations, and the convening provided space to share lessons learned and ask questions.   

Beyond Print is funded by an anchor donation from the Andrew and Julie Klingenstein Family Fund with additional funding from The Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund, a joint initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism.
