Workshop: tracking impact through service

A follow-up virtual session from the Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit

July 11, 2025

Date & time: Thursday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. EDT / 11 a.m. PDT

Presenters:
Madison Karas and Patrick Boehler, Gazzetta

At the Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit, Madison Karas and Patrick Boehler led a session exploring journalism’s ongoing struggle to articulate and measure its value, and how this is affecting our relationships with everyone we interact with — from funders to collaborators to our audiences. They shared how a service framework can guide our approach to moving forward, especially in times of systemic, political, and financial disruption.

To build on this idea, Madison and Patrick are joining the Lenfest Communities of Practice for a follow-up session. This working session is designed for audience practitioners interested in implementing service methods in their newsrooms to provide audiences with valuable information that helps them navigate their lives. Together, we’ll collectively discuss how to move past abstract notions of impact, identify current roadblocks in our practices, and determine starting points for implementing elements of a service-oriented framework.

Attendees are encouraged to sign up by Aug. 11, as a pre-session survey will be shared to help guide the workshop. The conclusions of this workshop will be presented in a broader session for all Lenfest Communities in September on the practice of the theory of service in journalism.
