Fundraising and measuring long-term impact

A News Philanthropy Network workshop

October 24, 2023

Those in the journalism field understand how independent reporting promotes civil discourse and a healthy democracy. However, the positive outcomes of journalism are often seen over long-term horizons, and funders often require the organizations they support to report on quantitative or qualitative metrics that show the impact of their funding in the short-term.

Successful news fundraisers are able to work with their newsrooms to both track the outcomes from their journalism and communicate both the short-term and long-term impact of their organization’s work.

The News Philanthropy Network hosted a workshop on impact tracking led by Karol Mason, a consultant for Schultz & Williams, a national consulting firm based in Philadelphia that works exclusively with nonprofits to help them reach their fundraising goals.

Karol comes to Schultz & Williams from the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, an education and advocacy organization with the goal of reducing the incidence of disease and death from coronavirus in the African-American community, where she served as Director of Development.

In particular, she highlighted the REAL framework for how to build nurture relationships with funders, help them evolve their thinking on how they approach impact measurement, and use that view to garner long-term support.
