This training is designed for media executives and development staff with experience cultivating major gifts who want to optimize their programs and tailor their approach for newsroom funding. This program can be a next step for those who have completed The Lenfest News Philanthropy Network’s introductory major gift pipeline program or fundraisers from other industries who are new to journalism.

During this four-part course, you will work with experienced fundraising professionals who will share insights they’ve developed supporting journalism organizations. Led by Terry Quinn, chief development officer of The Texas Tribune, the course draws heavily on methods developed over the Tribune’s 11-year history. Terry will be joined by guests from other news outlets and organizations, including The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Lenfest Institute. This course is produced by RevLab at The Texas Tribune.

During the course, we will dig into the following:

  • Building a pipeline of prospective donors, including methods for identifying potential supporters from publicly available sources
  • Soliciting major donors, including individuals with no previous history of supporting journalism
  • Developing donor retention and stewardship strategies
  • Developing giving circles as a revenue source and pipeline to major gifts

The course will meet weekly for 90-minute sessions starting on Thursday July 29 at 3pm EDT and continuing through August 19 . Optional office hours will be available for those who want additional help and feedback.

RevLab is a grant-funded resource center that helps publishers expand revenue-generating capabilities. RevLab is based within The Texas Tribune and funded in part by the Facebook Journalism Project.

The deadline to apply is Friday July 9 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

In order to foster an interactive learning environment, we’ll only be able to accept 30 applicants. We’ll be sure to share resources and lessons with everyone who applied.
